Weather forecasts showing incorrect information?

The forecasts returned by the API sometimes have incorrect information.

For example, on 2015-08-02 at 9:15pm (21:15), the external weather according to weather.com was about 77 degrees.

The forecast returns illogical data:
- 2015-08-02 20:57
... current temperature 84.9 degrees, (8 degrees off)
... min/max for the day: 64.8 to 81.0 degrees (so how come current is 84.9 if the maximum for the day was 81 degrees?)
- 2015-08-02 21:00 (3 minutes after the data from 20:57)
... current temperature 77.2 degrees (so it is either 84.9 or 77? temperature does not change 8 degrees in 3 minutes)

Any help appreciated.

    Hi Bernardo,
Thanks for the question and information. This is caused by a known issue with our weather provider.
We are currently working on improvements to this but I can't say right now when this will be live.

I will update this thread when I get more information.

  • Thank you August,
I checked the data we are returning right now from our providers for those coordinates and the data looks good (at the moment)

    First provider:
    temperature=81.00
    humidity=49
    2015-09-14T13:56:00.00-05:00

    Second Provider:
    temperature=81
    humidity="49"

Can you send your thermostat identifier to developer at ecobee dot com and we can look into this further if you are still seeing issues.

    Thanks,
    Scott.

  • Hi August,

Thank you for sending your information. Our weather provider is CustomWeather (http://www.customweather.com/). From examining your thermostat, CustomWeather is pulling weather information from the following weather station:

If one of these stations provides a more accurate forecast for your location then you can contact our support team and they will switch your thermostat to pull weather from that designated station.

  • Any update on the incorrect weather issue? My house is on a mountain at 5000 feet. During the winter the outside temperatures are off (too high) by as much as 12 degrees F routinely. Tech support has tried different custom weather locations, and none are anywhere close to accurate. I would like to use weather underground and link to my personal weather station, or have Ecobee manufacture a wireless outside temperature sensor. This inaccurate outside weather data is critical for correctly setting the balance point on a dual-fuel heat pump set up. As it is, the ecobee is essentially unusable for this application.

  • HI William. Your idea of our supporting outdoor sensors is among several approaches to improving weather data (not forecast) accuracy that we're actively investigating. Unfortunately I don't have details or a timeline to share right now. However, please provide the lat/lon of a street intersection near your home so that I can add the location to our test set.

Currently the weather data my Ecobee3 is reporting is off by over 20 degrees F. It's not even in the same ballpark (reporting 72F, it's 96F out). I just called support and they said all the stations around here are reporting a max of 80F. She even gave me the coords for one (9mi away), and every other source of data in that area is reporting 93F or higher. Custom Weather or Ecobee obviously have a very significant issue with their weather data that has been going on for a long time.

You guys should either fix this, or give us the option to turn off the weather display and refund some money since the feature is worse than useless at the moment.

  • Last week, I finally got Ecobee support to acknowledge they have a data issue with Custom Weather (or that Custom Weather is providing them with wrong data).

It was the third time I reported that the data reported on my Ecobee3 was at least 20 degrees off and it wasn't just a "30min out of date" issue (it had been 20+ degrees off for hours). Two reps also told me the temps reported at stations all around the area, and they were all wrong (not even close - it was 95F out, they were all saying it was in the low 70s).

Multiple reps have told me they use CustomerWeather. At this point, I'd rather not have the supposed outside temperature show up at all rather than it be wrong every time. It's worse than useless.

  • I agree that grossly incorrect information is worse than none. In my case the reported outdoor humidity was 70% and my calibrated hygrometer showed 50%.

  • Came here wondering about where the weather forecast came from (I've only had an Ecobee3 for 24 hours), but the forecast is _horrible_. It's off 20 degree right now, and spikes overnight in obviously unnatural ways. I'm used to "real" temperatures being a little off as we living in the mountains, so most forecasts are a little off from what my Accurate weather stations reports, but never this wildly and inconstantly.

I compared what Ecobee has to CustomWeather.com > myForecast for my zipcode (not lat/long), see screenshots. 82F, when it's actualy 63F outside and that's what the myforecast report shows as well....

Then looking at the temperature history overnight I see at 1:30am the forecast temp dropped 10 degrees to 58F bounced immediately back to 63F, then dropped again to 53F then back to 63F.... before climbing to 82F even though it's really only 62F outside right now.

+1 on being able to feed our own outdoor temperature sensor into Ecobee. I used a Acurite Weather Station that's proven reasonably reliable and I _think_ there is a rudimentary API reading it's data.

  • Hi Josh,
Comparing current conditions and forecasts for Garrison, CO and Hartman Rocks, CO even now (customweather vs weatherunderground) provides different data sets, so is really not a reliable way to sanity check the variance.

From examining your thermostat, CustomWeather is pulling weather information from the following weather station:

    location city="12478" city_name="Gunnison" latitude="38.54" longitude="-106.92" location="Gunnison" state="CO" state_name="Colorado" country="US" iso_cc="US" country_name="United States" distance="0.00"

If one of these stations provides a more accurate forecast for your location then you can contact our support team and they will switch your thermostat to pull weather from that designated station.

    I hope this helps,

    • As per my latest (and previous comments), the issue is not "wrong weather station" it is that the data is bad or being processed by Ecobee incorrectly, and while I think they do care, they don't seem willing to look into the issues for some reason.

I don't know if they don't believe us, don;t care, or don't know how to fix the problem, but it obviously has not been escalated to the people who can do anything about it... for a year now.
    • Also according to the long/lat that is stated as being my weather station, it seems as though its pulling data from the Gunnison Airport. Which on that day I have the screen shot of it saying -5 on the website and +25 on the Ecobee.....

    Scott,

I have contacted support in the past when the Custom Weather website was showing correct (or in the ballpark anyway) data, and my Ecobee was not. The rep switched me to an equally wrong, but different "local" data source.

The issue for at least some of us is NOT that we're connected to the "wrong" Custom Weather station, but that the EcoBee data is bad. Either you're translating something incorrectly (C -> F), the data is weeks/months (not just "up to 30min") old, or your system is simply broken. I tried talking with multiple support reps, and asked for the issue to be escalated months ago (over the summer).

Nothing seems to have been done. I now just ignore the weather/temperature on my Ecobee, which sucks since it could be a useful feature.

It would be awesome if someone from your technical team would take all of these reports seriously and do some debugging.

    Thanks,
    Gene
    • Hi Gene, I hear your pain and hope it can be fixed soon. Just wanted to let you know where I am, the Ecobee is usually within about 0.5 degrees of other weather sources (The Weather Network or The Weather Channel are two I usually reference). I am not certain what is going on, but it is apparently not everywhere.
    • I would like to update my remark and add further information. Today for whatever reason, my temperature displayed versus that of outside is 13F difference. The prediction is right on. It is the actual temperature display that is off, this morning it was off by half that amount, as we move into the afternoon and the day warms up the difference is greater. When I go to customweather.com to check, the forecast is accurate and matches what the thermostat displays as well as that of other weather forecasts. The current temperature on customweather.com is out a small amount from what is the current temperature (and displayed on other weather sites), but is only around 4F degrees difference (still more than it should be). But the current temperature displayed on customweather.com does not match the thermostat!! Out by 7F degrees!

  • New to the Ecobee, but finding the weather prediction very inaccurate. I looked at the Ecobee, it's source (Custom Weather, myforecast.com), the NWS, Weather Channel, Weather Underground, and Accuweather. There are two fundamental issues with the customweather.com predictions. The Ecobee display is an exact match for customweather.com

    1. The Ecobee daily range for today (Sunday) is spot on for the other services, today at 44F high and 29F low. However, just underneath, the detailed day shows an afternoon high of 39F, not 44F. This difference is the same as that on the customweather.com site, when comparing the 48 hour forecast to the 72 hour forecast. This is a very odd behavior of customweather.com, not Ecobee.

2.The extended forecast of the Ecobee (and underlying customweather.com forecast) is pretty dramatically pessimistic. For example, the mean of Monday averages of the other services is 53.8F high and 34.3F low whle customweather shows 49F high and 28F low. This is repeated every day. The worst is Wednesday nigh, where the other services have a mean of 51.3F while customweather says 32F!

For Monday through Thursday, the Ecobee (and customweather.com) is between 2.4 and 6.5 standard deviations lower than the mean of the other services.

Why would Ecobee be working with a weather provider with such deviant forecasts?

  • Hi Paul,
Just to give an update from Custom Weather regarding your first point:
The segments in the detailed forecast are more of an average for the segment, so the afternoon temperature that you see will not always match with the maximum temperature in the 7-day forecast. This is especially true in the winter where the maximum temperature usually occurs right after noon instead of in the late afternoon in the summer.

As for your second point, Custom Weather are aware of problems with the temperatures in the New England area and are investigating.

I'll update here when I know more.

    Scott
    • ScottF - The Custom Weather problems are not only in the New England area.

I've reported problems with temperature disparities of 20F in the San Francisco Bay Area multiple times both in this thread, and also reported the issues directly to customer service - while they were going on. Every time I have gotten a response of "we'll look into it" with no follow up. Terrible customer service for what is otherwise a nice product (as long as I ignore the outside temperature being displayed on the unit).

There seem to be endemic issues with Custom Weather and/or the Ecobee interface to their data. If there is some better place or way we can report these problems, where they will actually be looked into, please let us know.
    • Gene - the San Fransisco Bay Area (among many others) is well known for problems recording good localized climate data - the geography is the problem.

The ocean, the bay and the radical changes in localized elevation all contribute to extreme variability from one sensor to another. This all leads to different weather providers using different methods of interpolating, smoothing and averaging the data.

My house is only 700' above sea level on hillside facing the Pacific but the nearest weather station, only a couple of miles away, is on the other side of the hill so it's almost always off compared to the thermometer outside my window.

In the end, from what I see, differences of a few degrees either way has virtually no effect on the ecobee's performance - just on my decision what to wear.

  • Scott-

The problem is NOT limited to New England. I have been complaining for a year about wildly inaccurate outside temperature reporting on my ecobee in the NC mountains. It makes my dual fuel furnace - heat pump essentially useless. Please offer an outside thermostat, or option to use weather underground, which can read and report data from my personal weather station.

  • I just found this forum/thread, and I figured I'd chime in too. I've been using an Ecobee for almost 5 months now, and just added a 2nd one to a new addition on my home. I do love the wifi connectivity and being able to monitor/adjust from anywhere with my phone. However, I also find the wx data inaccurate, and would love to be able to select my home weather station. My data is available through Wunderground and Davis Weatherlink. The Ecobees are pulling data from a neighboring town and it is frequently 5-12oF off. If we could use our own data, then it would be the bee's knees! :-)

  • I’m frustrated
Current time, 11:30am. Outdoor Temp: 69F according to my outdoor thermometer, The National Weather Service AND Weather Underground.

According to my EcoBee is 80F outside... Aside from the the annoyance the problem is that this weather forecast is what all the HOME IQ data is based on... So the comparative run-time data and all the stuff is utterly wrong. All of EcoBee's data on how I'm doing relative to the weather, or my neighbors is junk. All the efficiency data is junk.

  • I’m Mad
The ecobee is a beautiful device, unfortunately that beauty is only skin deep!

It is unbelievable that this thread started more than a year ago and still there has been no solution! ecobee, you do realize that you are a THERMOSTAT company right? Accurate weather it not just a nicety, it is REQUIRED.

I will certainly never buy another eco bee product nor would I recommend it to anyone as long as this serious flaw exists.

Bad weather data from our provider, shame on you for such a lame excuse, it's been WAY too long to keep spewing that explanation.

I also see that many time you have given the excuse that there are more than one station available in the area, if that is the case, then at least give people the opportunity to pick from those stations without the need to call support.

I have seen request after request to allow support for Weather Underground - Personal Weather Stations, which you for some reason seem completely adverse to, and I have to ask WHY, you claim that Weather Underground is only good for current weather and not forecasting, while I would strongly disagree with that, even if it was true, Current Weather is far more important than any forecast IMHO, (ok, maybe not so humble), so why not allow your customers the choice of using your built in weather or their own on location and far more accurate Personal Weather Stations?

    SOAP BOX MODE: OFF

PLEASE do something about this, we all want so badly to love this thermostat!

  • Just installed the Ecobee3 a couple days ago. Had similar issues with forecasts. Also there appears to be a lag (for me anyway) way beyond 30 minutes. Perhaps caused by me fiddling with locations. Anyway, talking to customer support today I received lat and lons of nearby weather stations. They do not correspond to nearby stations supplied by CustomWeather. Which leads me to believe their weather sourcing has changed. They also appear to be more granular. My nearest station is just 2.8 miles away.

I don't even look at mine for the weather anymore. Though, it's only off by about 3 degrees right now, it's usually a much greater difference. This alone has made me not want to recommend the device to family and friends. Besides the very inaccurate current weather, I love everything else about the ecobee.

  • I’m frustrated
After leaving the location settings alone for a few days, I notice that the temperature is accurate as the station is within just a couple of miles. The problem is the lag however. It will update on a 30 min basis only if you happen to be lucky. Sometimes the lag is 90 minutes or more. I only care about this because I have set the AC threshold to 65 degrees (outside temperature) and during the spring and fall temperatures where I live can rise and fall quickly. I don't want the AC to pop on when it's 74 in the house and 60 outside. Which can happen when the oven has been used and the high temp for the day is near 80. They really need to fix this. What good is home automation when the ecobee can easily violate one of the common rules of AC compressor use: don't start it when outside temps fall below 65 degrees.

  • I live in a metro area so there are a number of stations around me. An ecobee CSR listed them along with the distance and current temp. They may have the ability to lock you into a weather station that will be more accurate. That's what was intimated to me. Too bad we can't simply connect to our own weather station.

  • I had one this past weekend which I am still waiting for support to answer. They offered to switch to another weather station, I have challenged them and not yet received a response. What the display read was virtually impossible, showing a drop of around 22C or 40F degrees in around 30 minutes and rising that same 22C or 40F degrees 30 minutes later. How is it possible to drop from a temperature of 41F to 1F in 30 minutes. and then rise back up to 41F 30 minutes later? This would take a catastrophic event to occur.

There is something wrong with either the source data or their interpretation of the data. No other reasonable explanations exist.

See attached graph. Note data is shown in C - however the weather station sending data would also be in C as it is only perhaps 3 km or 2 miles away. (support said 8km but they mapped it by road which goes around a bay of water)

  • Your right, the source is the problem. Given that the event occurred at 1:00am strongly suggests provider/equipment glitch. ecobee doesn't "interpret" the data, it copies it raw from the provider to the thermostat. I've confirmed this several times by comparing the raw data (from my own feed) to my thermostat.

ALL weather providers (except gov) are at the mercy of varying reliability and accuracy of weather station equipment because they don't OWN them. However, they often mitigate inaccuracies by interpolating using nearby, more reliable stations.

Unfortunately, some free providers actually include a network of backyard (hobby) sensors that spew nonsense.

Lastly, 99% of North America's weather equipment sample data once every hour most often on the hour. So it's really remarkable that reporting services are actually as close to agreeing as they are.

  • And the forecast is not much better apparently. Today with temperature currently outside at 50 degrees and rising, the forecast shows the snowflake symbol!! Even rain is not in forecast for the day on all other stations. Since this is somehow supposed to be used by the algorithm to heat/cool home it would be nice if it were somewhat accurate.

  • That's shit, man! From my understanding, it won't affect the general operation of the ecobee, but if it MIGHT actually prevent your A/C compressor from firiing up if it things it's too cold outside. I think ecobee should switch providers, this kind of insane data is making CustomWeather lose credibility.
